Rationale summer 2018

I want to write about the benefits and drawbacks from being a creative practitioner on Instagram. Being one of the largest and most frequently used social media platforms, it holds a great purpose for artists who want to post their artwork for free and easily being able to achieve an online portfolio to reach out to other artists, business and potential clients. However, the saturation of users has created a very competitive environment where likes and followers has become important in order to succeed online. This is where theorists such as Baudrillard and his theory of simulation is relevant as a simulation of reality is what artists are now using to determine their skill and worth.

To be successful online requires so much researching, experience and understanding users behaviour, an amazing artist who doesn’t know these tips wont succeed online, whereas a mediocre artist has the potential to if they apply the above to their profile. This makes you reflect on whether constantly putting yourself out there online really is the best option. Businesses can sometimes take advantage of keen artists with smaller followings by trying to gain access to their work without payment in exchange for exposure, which is of no certain benefit to artists.

Despite all of this, Instagram can be very useful for creative practitioners, it can be straightforward and quick when posting your work with possibilities to reach a global audience and get immediate responses. I want to go into detail about this and uncover what it is to be successful, through analytics, instagrams growing features and creating an aesthetic with editing and filters. Likewise I want to find out what problems are generated from posting your work online.

Based on my research I want to write my essay about how instagram can be a positive and fulfilling experience despite the ‘fake’ and ‘toxic’ association it has currently. I think it is dependant on how people choose to use the app, such as making it an empowering environment where you’re confident in showing who you are/ your work. I believe that in a world where social media is more relevant and important it is good to be able to keep up with it as younger generations are socialising more confidently online than they are in real life.

Visual Ideas:

Set a challenge to grow social media presence
Regularly post work, stories and be active online
Make a business account or use an analytics app such as iconosquare
Reflect on what has and hasn’t worked
Make work that has a consistent aesthetic and colour palette
Make a series of 9 square images that show techniques based on what is successful on instagram (aesthetic, colour palette, illustrations based on typical Instagram posts, food, makeup, fashion)
Display images in person, is it still successful?
Could post images on a new instagram page
Start a new instagram so that its more accurate (build a following from these pieces)
